"What are you doing here as a B.Com graduate?" exclaimed the recruiter.
Mubaid had travelled 2,500 kilometres from Kashmir to Bangalore, then 20–25 kilometres through the city's notorious traffic to reach the office. He had presented a three-page CV. None of it mattered. "This left me seriously disheartened," he recalls. "For the first time in my life, I had studied with dedication. And now, nothing was happening." What follows is a conversation about rejection, about direction, and about the handful of people who happened to say the right thing at the right moment: a pamphlet from a family friend, a cup of tea after an Arabic class, and an interviewer who looked at his three-page resume and asked why he was applying for the lowest rung on the ladder.

Ubaid was about eighteen when he asked his father for permission to tutor a friend's cousin for ₹2,500 a month. His father asked him why he wanted to. "I want to know how it is to earn," Ubaid told him. "When a person earns his own money, how does he feel?" He taught for a year and a half, and paid for his own phone, his own bike, his own lunch. The road from there to an engineering role at Cisco ran through a B.Tech he took on largely because everyone else was, a year lost, and nine months of deliberate, punishing study.

"They are just looking for a skill. They don't need your degree."
Saaid had attended fifteen days of CCNA classes when he walked into his first networking interview. He could not answer most of what they asked him. What he told them instead was that he would learn it, and they hired him anyway, into the company's first-ever batch of freshers. Before that came six months of unemployment in Bangalore, arriving in May and getting the offer in December, in the final month before his accommodation ran out.

Brilliant, honestly. I sometimes miss those days.
Brilliant, to be honest. I sometimes miss those days. From the method of teaching to the infrastructure and space for labs, all of it was really good. The notes, the support, the doubts cleared by trainers were great. We were given labs that would put us to thinking with the concepts we learned.

On his first day, Junaid Sir gave a lecture on IP addresses. I still mention it in interviews.
I did my graduation for the sake of the degree. I chose networking first. Irfan Sahib told me not to go outside Kashmir and waste my money, so I called Techboxx. We owe Techboxx a lot. Leaving felt like leaving home.
Overall, my experience at Techboxx was a roller-coaster ride, fun, intense, full of labs. When we finally completed CCNA, CCNP and CCNP Security, leaving felt like leaving home, that's the bond we had with Sir and Techboxx.
